Perfect Sugar-Free Cream Cheese Frosting

Is cream cheese frosting keto? Classic cream cheese icing relies on the use of powdered sugar, so no. But the only ingredient in this entire recipe that requires a swap to make low in carbs is the powdered sugar!

This cream cheese frosting is just perfect for a person to cut down on the sugar content of their diets and regulate blood sugars.

I have added cream cheese to frostings for years and never realized just how flexible it was. Gorgeous, creamy, protein-rich, and reduces the need to use tons of powdered sugar.

Whipped up with a bit of butter, sweetened with a bit of powdered sweetener, you’ve got the perfect cake or cupcake topping on with fewer carbs. Cream cheese frosting is the quintessential carrot cake but also does very well with chocolate cakes, hummingbird cake, and red velvet cake.

Spread it on thick, or pipe it high on cupcakes!

This frosting isn’t as sweet as one would expect from a vanilla buttercream. I can tell there’s that little slight tang taste. It’s gonna go amazing if you pair all your sweet treats. That is why it has become my go-to when I’m making low-carb cakes!

What You’ll Need:

  • Cream Cheese (full fat recommended)
  • Butter
  • Powdered Monk Fruit Sweetener
  • Vanilla Extract (or a scraped vanilla bean)

*If you’re using a granulated sweetener, mix it into a food processor or blender and blend till it’s powder. No special product has to be bought!
Pure Monk Fruit or Stevia Can Also Make Keto Cream Cheese Frosting
The good news is that cream cheese frosting can be made without sugar alcohols.

I use the Powdered Monk Fruit Sweetener, which does contain erytritol. So, if you’ll be avoiding erythritol and still want to make this recipe, then you can with some variation as well.

No Sugar Alcohol Ingredients:

  • Full Fat Cream Cheese
    Butter
    Allulose (optional)
    Pure stevia or monk fruit
    Vanilla Extract
    Cacao Butter
  • Add 1/2 cup allulose and some monk fruit or stevia to taste into the mixture.Melt the cacao butter and whisk that liquid into the mixture with the mixer running. The butter will harden as it’s mixed in with the cream cheese and butter mixture. It will help thicken the frosting to a spreadable texture.
  • Don’t use liquid sweeteners-they make the frosting too thin.

Keto Cream Cheese Frosting

Step 1: Cream the butter and cheese. To cream thoroughly – and for the finest frosting – chop the butter and cream cheese into tiny pieces and let sit at room temperature for an hour or two.

Step 2: Then, add the butter and cream cheese to a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl. Beat the cream cheese and butter together with a whisk attachment or a hand mixer until smooth and creamy, with no remaining lumps An electric mixer is highly recommended for the best texture. If you must hand-stir it, that’s okay, too-it’ll just take a little longer to be done, but still taste fantastic!

Add in the vanilla and powdered sweetener to the cream cheese mixture. It should whip up to be thick but light and fluffy. Add tons of powdered sweetener until it is to your liking.

Use this thick and creamy low-carb cream cheese frosting to top your favorite keto cakes or cupcakes!

You can store the rest of the frosting for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Store it in a tightly covered container and freeze frosting up to 3 months.

What if my frosting is too thick?

If your cream cheese frosting is too stiff, thin with 1 tablespoon heavy cream. Add additional tablespoons, or two of heavy whipping cream, beating in between additions until the right consistency is attained.

My Low Carb Sugar free Cream Cheese frosting is too thin.

Add more powdered sweetener to your frosting until the right texture is achieved.
Dont let the soft cream cheese and butter, as they might make it nearly impossible to get thick.

Make Less Sweet Cream Cheese Frosting

Cream cheese has water that melts out when the frosting is whipped, and if you just add 1/2 cup -1 cup of powdered sweetener, it will be too thin.

There is a work around! Melt 1/2 ounce of cacao butter and pour in with the mixer running. It will solidify when it hits the cooler ingredients and help form a thicker textured frosting.

Keto Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

And if it’s keto chocolate frosting that you’re looking for, well, this is still the perfect recipe! Actually, the unsweetened cocoa powder also improves the texture of this frosting!

You can use this same recipe, add 1/4 cup natural cocoa powder for a lighter chocolate flavor or 1/3 cup cocoa for a deeper chocolate flavor.

Keto Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting

Make a lemon cream cheese frosting to give your cakes a fresh spring like feel.
Add only 2 tbsp of lemon juice and 2 tbsp of lemon zest in the frosting and raise the powdered sweetener by 1/2 cup..

Berry Cream Cheese Frosting

Add a little fun to your keto cream cheese frosting! Use freeze-dried raspberries or strawberries. Strawberries make the frosting pink whereas raspberries make it deeper pink or reddish!

Add in 1/4 cup for a lighter color, or 1/2 cup freeze-dried berries for a darker hue and flavor!

Frost Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

This is an icing that spreads beautifully or pipes well. It’s even thick enough to pipe beautiful designs onto your favorite keto cupcakes.
