A Dreamy Orange Fluff Dessert

This is quick and easy orange fluff that you can make in few minutes for any event.

In my house, fluff desserts were always sneaky mom desserts that packed a little more nutrition into it than one could ever realize. My mom’s recipe always contained cottage cheese which means our sweet snacks were actually loaded with proteins. She would do fluff-style desserts, leaving them in the fridge for quick weeknight treats. Well, they are super simple to whip up and only require a few ingredients; therefore, making it an ideal dessert recipe for a busy working mother!

However, among other flavors including lemon and strawberry-banana, pineapple fluff; orange has been the best.

Cottage Cheese…In a Dessert??

If you love cottage cheese then I don’t have to say anything else because you already know what I am talking about. If you’re not sure though let me get you there.

This orange fluff is not made from cottage cheese – trust me! This particular dish is prepared by blending cottage cheese until completely smooth. It provides some tanginess and makes the dessert creamy. What comes out is only creamy orange goodness. For me, there’s something so right about a dessert that is reminiscent of my all-time favourite ice cream-creamsicle without much work involved? Total win if you ask me.

For my sophomore year, I served as a waitress in a local restaurant during the period that I attended college and actually saved up my tips for one week to buy an affordable food processor. This was so that whenever I wanted it, there would be some fluff ready for me. This is just serious dedication to fluff, which indicates how much I love my mother’s crafty orange fluff.

How to make mom’s orange fluff

One of the easiest desserts you can ever make is the orange fluff. That is why mum used to prepare it usually but is tasty enough to include on any holiday dessert menu.

Ingredients You’ll Need

To create this recipe, you will require 4 simple ingredients and 1 optional ingredient. These are:

Cottage cheese: as stated earlier above, this adds some good protein with tanginess and smoothness.

Orange jell-o mix: It imparts sweetness and orange flavor into the entire dish.

Thawed whipped topping: It makes it fluffy. You can use either cool whip or truwhip-whichever one tickles your fancy; otherwise you can choose mild cream icing that has been stabilized with whipped cream as an alternative.

Canned mandarin oranges: Sweet pieces of oranges in every bite!

Also, you can add in a few miniature marshmallows if you like. Anyway, it is yummy..

Making This Recipe

To have a smooth creamy texture, blend the cottage cheese in your food processor until it is very soft. Put puree into another bowl and stir in dry jell-o mixture using a whisk. Add whipped topping to the jello mixture folding gently with a rubber spatula. The last thing is to fold in mandarin oranges and if you like miniature marshmallows.

Let it sit in the refrigerator for at least two hours so that all ingredients mix well. For me I use some whipped cream and fresh orange slices as garnish.

FAQs

Can I Use Fresh Oranges Instead of Canned Mandarin Oranges?

One doesn’t need to peel off or remove membrane from canned mandarin oranges when preparing this kind of orange fluff because they are already peeled off among other things. On the other hand, where one wants to use fresh oranges, he/she must to supreme them by taking away both the pith and membrane; otherwise there would be no meaning having them in such an edible. Actually these oranges will be less sweet than their mandarin counterparts since they usually come packed light syrup; therefore, remember that unlike before your final dessert may not taste as much sweet as indicated in original recipe.

Feel free to make it a day or two ahead of time since it keeps well for about 3 days in the refrigerator.

Can I freeze this orange fluff?

I don’t think that freezing is good for this fluff. It’s worth noting that when cottage cheese is frozen and thawed, sometimes its texture may change making your fluff turn watery instead of being fluffy as before.

Are there Different Flavors of Jello That Can Be Used?

This makes my mom’s fluff recipes great; you can switch up virtually any kind of fruit and jello flavor you like. For instance, my pineapple fluff has pineapple jello and canned pineapple inside. On the other hand, if you enjoy orange fluff but want to mix another taste into it mango or apricot jello would be perfect with mandarin oranges.

But by making these alterations, one ends up with an adorable fast dessert that will certainly satisfy anyone who tastes it. Have fun eating your orange fluff!
